Executive Steering Committee

The Executive Committee consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair, Immediate Past Chair and Vice Chair, Task Force Chairs, and the Comprehensive Cancer Control Program Director.

The Executive Committee acts on behalf of The Colorado Cancer Coaltion (CCC) making operational decisions to guide the CCC to accomplish its mission and will assist with setting of the agenda, guiding discussion, and direction of the CCC.

QUALITY OF LIFE & PALLIATIVE CARE TASK FORCE

Cordt Kassner, PhD, serves as Co-Chair of the Colorado Cancer Coalition's Quality of Life / Palliative Care Committee. He is honored and excited to participate in the coalition because of the extensive statewide collaborations and important work the coalition is doing. Cordt serves as Executive Director of the Colorado Hospice Organization (www.ColoradoHospice.org) and Executive Director of the Colorado Palliative Care Partnership www.ColoradoPalliativeCare.org). Prior to joining the
Colorado Hospice Organization, he worked at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center for 12 years. Most recently, he was the founding manager of the Population-based Palliative Care Research Network (www.uchsc.edu/popcrn) based in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Cordt has been an active in Colorado's healthcare ethics community for several years and founded the Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum (www.uchsc.edu/chef), a collaboration of hospital-based ethics committees throughout Colorado.

BREAST CANCER TASK FORCE

Vicki Tosher has been working in the Colorado cancer community as a patient advocate, primarily in breast cancer, since 1994.  As an advocate with the National Breast Cancer Coalition, she has made contact with providers and advocates around the country.  Her work with Sense of Security, Inc., the Colorado Breast Cancer Coalition, and as editor of the Colorado Breast Cancer Resources Directory has brought her in touch with providers and patients around the state.  She has also worked in the arena of health care access for cancer patients through work with the Colorado Breast Cancer Task Force.  She is known in the advocacy community as someone who is able to bring together people in need of information with people who have information.  Vicki has also journeyed through the breast cancer experience twice, once in 1992 -1993 and again from 2003 - 2005. Vicki has earned the right to speak with personal knowledge and urgency on the topic of personal advocacy and as a breast cancer advocate in general.

SKIN CANCER TASK FORCE

Mary Buller is the President of Klein Buendel, Inc., a health
communication research firm in Golden, Colorado. She has worked in
public health education for 20 years with a special focus on sun
protection and skin cancer prevention. Ms. Buller develops and evaluates sun safety and nutrition education programs for children and adults. Her research team has successfully competed for over $4 million dollars of research funding from the National Cancer Institute. From 1998 to 2001, she founded and directed the American Sun Protection Association, a nonprofit trade association for the sun protection industry. She is a member of the Skin Cancer Prevention Task Force of the American School Health Association and Chair of the Skin Cancer Task Force of the Colorado Cancer Coalition. Ms. Buller has a Bachelors degree in Communication from Michigan State University and a Masters degree in Speech Communication from Texas Tech University.

Colorectal Task Force

Jan Lowery, PhD, MPH is an instructor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Her primary research area is cancer prevention and early detection. She currently manages two family cancer registries, the Colon Cancer Family Registry and the Cancer Genetics Network, and an ongoing prevention trial to promote colon cancer screening among high-risk individuals. She is also involved in two educational outreach projects to inform individuals at-risk for hereditary breast, ovarian and colon cancer about the benefits of genetic testing. Dr. Lowery has been a member of the Colorado Cancer Coalition for several years. She is a member of the ovarian cancer advisory committee and current chair of colon cancer task force. She became involved in the colon cancer task force as chair in hopes that her experience and research background would contribute to the overall mission to elevate screening rates and reduce colon cancer mortality in Colorado.
