May is Melanoma Awareness Month sponsored by the Skin Cancer Task Force and Aruba Aloe

Aruba Aloe® and Sun Safe Colorado have partnered together for May Melanoma Awareness Month
With over 1 million cases of skin cancer estimated in the U.S. this year alone, it is very important for families to practice sun safety, and learn how to enjoy the outdoors safely.

To help raise awareness on how to enjoy the outdoors safely, Aruba Aloe® will be selling “Protect Your Skin” tote bags for $5. You will save 20% off your entire purchase when you buy a $5 “Protect Your Skin” tote bag.* The $5 purchase price of the bag will be donated to Sun Safe Colorado to help promote sun safe activities and lifestyle.

Aruba Aloe will be hosting two information sessions with Sun Safe Colorado. You can have your picture taken with the Sun Safe Colorado UV Camera and see your sun damage.

**************************
The Skin Cancer Task Force (SCTF) is a small network of Colorado institutions, businesses and individuals who work together to help reduce the incidence and magnitude of skin cancer in the state. We partner with schools, workplaces, child care centers, and other organizations to promote UV protection practices and policies related to shade, hats, sunscreen, and early detection.

Our objectives and strategies are outlined in the Colorado Cancer Plan. The Melanoma Chapter includes enhancing skin cancer education and prevention, promoting sun safety policies at workplaces and schools, working to insure that statewide legislation protects children and adolescents from the harmful effects of artificial tanning, creating new sources of shade, and increasing the early detection of skin cancers by physicians.

Coalition Quarterly Meeting

Quarterly Membership Meeting Quick Summary

What a great meeting! Thank you to each of you who joined us for the Quarterly Membership meeting on Thursday, April 26. We had nearly 60 people in attendance and lots of energy around the work being done to save lives and improve the quality of life for Coloradans.

For the first time, we were able to provide live video of the meeting to extend our reach statewide! Thanks to the efforts of Krystal Morwood and Brandon Williams from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Livestream was an effective use of technology for our meeting. You can find the archived video and related documents at this link: http://new.livestream.com/cdphepsd/cancer

Our thanks to
BreastReconstructionMatters.com for a delicious lunch from Udi’s, the American Cancer Society for the meeting space/AV and their teamwork, and DHHS Office on Women’s Health for the phone conference line.

Task Force Reports
provide the most recent information on the important work being done by each group.

Anna Nelson, Recruitment Specialist, Colorado Marrow Donor Program at the Bonfils Blood Center provided information on signing-up to be a marrow donor and the need/process for donors. Each year more than 10,000 people in the US are diagnosed with diseases for which a blood stem cell or marrow transplant could provide a cure.

Nancy Beegle, Coalition Executive Committee Chair, highlighted the 2016 Strategic Plan noting that we have a new mission statement, launched a new website and are developing a new membership plan. She encouraged members to become engaged in the strategies set forth and grow the organization into a value-added resource for members dedicated to saving lives from cancer. The presentation can be found on the Livestream site from the link above.

Mark your calendar – the next meeting is July 26th from 12 noon – 2:00 pm at the American Cancer Society.
